Founded in 1911, the Port of Grays Harbor is one of Washington State’s oldest port districts and Washington’s only deep-water port located directly on the Pacific Ocean. The Port of Grays Harbor operates four deep-water marine terminals, the Westport Marina, Bowerman Airport and numerous industrial and business parks throughout the region. The addition of Satsop Business Park increases the Port’s properties to more than 1,000 acres of industrial properties and an additional 1,300 acres of sustainably managed forestland. Strategically located midway between Seattle and Portland and less than 1 1/2 hours from open sea, the Port of Grays Harbor provides businesses a diverse portfolio of facilities.
Following a strong year of exports across the Port of Grays Harbor’s docks the first quarter of 2013 continued to be a busy time for waterfront workers. Thirty seven vessels and barges called Grays Harbor loading automobiles, grains, liquid bulks, logs and woodchips for export. This diverse list of cargoes resulted in more than 45,000 hours being worked by longshore workers in Grays Harbor during January through March, which is the equivalent of 90 full-time jobs for the quarter.
“As our cargo volumes grow, and continue to diversify, so does the employment opportunities for local workers,” stated Port Executive Director Gary Nelson. “Each day a diverse group of workers report for duty within the marine complex, from the security guards and the longshore workers, to the auto processors, log sorters and biodiesel producers.”
Vessel and barge traffic was up 68% over first quarter 2012. Most products shipping through the Port arrive by rail from the US Midwest, East Coast and Canada. Last year the Port completed a major expansion of the rail system within the marine terminal complex and private companies invested more than $80 million in storage and shipping facilities.
“The Port is excited by the level of employment we are seeing within the marine industrial area,” expressed Port Commission President Chuck Caldwell. “The Port and our partners are seeing increases in all types of jobs from the auto processors working at Pasha Automotive Services to the rail operators with Puget Sound and Pacific Railroad to the highly skilled and trained pilots working for the Port guiding each vessel safely to the terminals. There are currently three privately proposed projects of over $100M (ship-in oil by train to the waiting oil tankers…. called CBR… Crude By Rail).
In 2012, a record setting 1.69 million metric tons of soybean products were exported through the Port of Grays Harbor to international markets including China, Japan, Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam and Australia. The increase in export activity in soybean products and other dry agriculture cargos has also been accompanied by increased exports in autos, liquid bulks and forest products. The Port of Grays Harbor operated at a 96% export rate in 2012. The increased export activity created more than one hundred FTE longshore jobs for handling the cargo.
